Source of materials

Generally speaking, this kind of fabric is similar to the polyethylene plastic used in our daily kitchen. This kind of material can allow infrared radiation to pass through, but it is impermeable and transparent, so it can't be used to make clothes at all. However, Stanford University researchers have integrated nanotechnology, photonics and chemical technology to make up for the shortcomings of this polyethylene material.

Raw material transformation

They found a polyethylene material commonly used in battery manufacturing, which has a special nanostructure and is opaque under visible light, but cannot block infrared radiation. The researchers then used a harmless chemical to make it water permeable, allowing water vapor molecules to pass through the material's nanopores. In this way, the improved new material has three basic conditions for clothing fabric: opaque under visible light, permeable and breathable, allowing heat radiation to pass through.

In order to make this light and thin material more like clothing fabric, the researchers designed a three-layer fabric structure with a certain strength and thickness: two layers of polyethylene, separated by cotton mesh.

Heat dissipation mechanism

The researchers point out that all objects, including the human body, radiate heat in the form of infrared radiation. Clothes limit the body's heat emissions and make the skin feel warmer.

This new fabric uses a completely different cooling mechanism: to promote body heat dissipation by reducing infrared radiation barriers, not using external energy, but by changing the infrared radiation penetration of the material.

Compared with the cotton cloth of the same thickness, the new fabric has better heat dissipation performance: the clothes made of the new fabric will be two degrees lower than the body temperature of the clothes made of the cotton cloth.

Little knowledge

Polyethylene is odorless, nontoxic, waxy like, with excellent low temperature resistance (lower service temperature can reach - 100 ~ - 70 ° C), good chemical stability, and can withstand most of the acid-base erosion (not resistant to acids with oxidation properties). It is insoluble in general solvents at room temperature, with small water absorption and excellent electrical insulation.

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new type of fabric with better heat dissipation than all natural or synthetic fabrics. They wrote in the journal Science that wearing clothes made of this fabric in summer can feel cool and comfortable even in an air-conditioned environment.
